A fairly quiet game, although the outcome might have been different if I had seen the combination on move 24. 1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. exd5 exd5 4. Nf3 Nf6 5. h3 Bd6 6. Bd3 missing the combination 24... Nxg2! then if 25. Kxg2 d4+ 25. Nxd3 Re8 26. Qd2 Qd8 27. Rd1 a5 28. Nf4 Qg5 29. f3 White could play 29. Nxd5 safely 29... Qe7 29... d4 saves material, because if White takes the pawn Black wins White's f-pawn. However, after 30. cxd4 Bxf3 White's passed pawn could be problematic. 30. Nxd5 Bxd5 31. Qxd5 Qe3+ 32. Kh1 Qe6 33. Qd3 Qxa2 34. Rd2 Qe6 35. Kh2 Qe5+ 36. g3 h5 37. f4 Qe4 38. Qd4 Qe6 39. Kg2 Qe3 40. Qxe3 Rxe3 41. Kf2 Re6 42. Kf3 Draw agreed 1/2-1/2 [C. Carroll] |

Inaccurate endgame play costs me the win. 1. d4 Nf6 2. Bg5 e6 3. e4 Be7 4. Nc3 d5 Transposing into a French Defense. 7. Nf3 is "book" 7... c5?! Allows White to get the d6 knight which is often devastating. 8. Nb5 Nb6 9. Nd6+ Kd8 10. dxc5 N6d7 11. Nf3 Nc6 12. Ng5 Ncxe5 13. f4 h6 14. fxe5 hxg5 15. c4 Kc7 16. cxd5 exd5 17. Qxd5 Qxe5+ 18. Qxe5 Nxe5 19. Be2 Be6 20. b4 b6 21. Nb5+ Kc6 22. Nd4+ Kd7 23. Rd1 Ke7 24. Nxe6 fxe6 25. 37. Rxb5 is wrong, as after 37... Rxb5 38. axb5 , Black's distant passed pawns will win. 39. Rc1 Kc7 40. Kc4 e5 41. Re1? 41. Kc5 wins 41... Re8 42. Kc5 e4 43. b6+ Kc8 44. b7+? 44. Rf1 44... Kc7 45. Rd1 Re5+ 46. Kd4 Re8 47. Re1 Kxc6 48. Rb1 Kc7 49. Rb5 Draw agreed. Crafty evaluates the position as better for Black after 49... e3! 1/2-1/2 [C. Carroll] |
