C. Carroll (1389) - W. Deer (1478)

Eastgate May Quads (Round 1, G/30)
Indianapolis, Indiana USA - May 30, 2001

Black sacs a piece for an attack, and then blunders another, leaving White up a full rook.

1. d4 Nf6 2. Bg5 g6 3. Nf3 Bg7 4. e3 O-O 5. c4 d6 6. Nc3 Nc6 7. a3 e5 8. Be2 h6 9. Bxf6 Bxf6 10. Nd5

Chessmaster prefers 10. d5

10... Bg7 11. O-O e4 12. Nd2 f5 13. f3 exf3 14. Bxf3 Kh7 15. Nf4 Qe8 16. Re1 Rf7 17. Nxg6 Kxg6 18. Bh5+ Kh7 19. Bxf7 Qxf7

Black now has the two bishops for rook and pawn, probably a better deal for him.

20. b3 Bd7

Threatening 21... Nxd4 22. exd4 Bxd4+

21. Kh1 Re8 22. Qf3 Bf6 23. Rf1 Bg5 24. Rae1 b6 25. g4 Ne7 26. gxf5 Bc6 27. Ne4

Also playable is 27. d5 then if 27... Nxd5 28. cxd5 Bxd5 29. e4

27... Rf8 28. d5 Nxd5 29. cxd5 Bxd5 30. Rd1 Bxb3 31. Nxg5+ hxg5 32. Qh3+ Kg7 33. Rd2 Bd5+ 34. Kg1 Be4 35. Qg4 Qf6 36. Rdf2

In the short time control, White and Black both miss the fact that Black's bishop is hanging. Fortunately, I notice it the second time around.

36... c5 37. Qxe4 Rf7 38. Qg4

White goes on to win.

1-0

Queen's Gambit Declined/Tarrasch without Nc3/Main LineD30/30

W. Churchill (1500) - C. Carroll (1389)

Eastgate May Quads (Round 2, G/30)
Indianapolis, Indiana USA - May 30, 2001

I sac a piece for an attack, a rare occurrence for me.

1. d4 d5 2. c4 e6 3. Nf3 Nf6 4. g3 c5 5. cxd5 exd5 6. Bg2 Nc6 7. O-O Be7 8. Be3 c4 9. Nc3 O-O 10. Ne5 Be6 11. Qa4 Nxe5 12. dxe5 Ng4 13. Bd4 Bd7 14. Qc2 Be6 15. Rad1 f6 16. f4 b6

Chessmaster points out this loses a pawn to 17. exf6 Nxf6 (17... Bxf6 18. Nxd5 Bxd5? 19. Bf2) 18. f5 Bf7 19. Bxf6 Bxf6 20. Nxd5

16... fxe5 preserves the material balance.

17. h3 Nh6 18. g4 Bxg4

My knight was getting pretty cramped, and I didn't see that bringing it back to f7 would have been any better. However, this misses the threat of 19. hxg4 Nxg4 20. Bxd5+

19. hxg4 Nxg4 20. Nxd5 fxe5 21. Nxe7+

White correctly tries to dispel the coming attack by trading off as much as possible.

21... Qxe7 22. Bf2

22. Qxc4+!

22... Rac8 23. Qe4 Rxf4

Black now has three pawns for the piece.

24. Qd5+ Kh8 25. Bh3 Nxf2 26. Rxf2 Rxf2 27. Kxf2 Rf8+ 28. Kg1 Qg5+ 29. Bg2 Qe3+ 30. Kh1 Qh6+ 31. Kg1 Qe3+ 32. Kh2 Qh6+ 33. Kg1 Qe3+

Yes, this should be a draw due to repitition. I was unable to claim it because my scoresheet was incomplete.

34. Kh2 Qh6+ 35. Bh3 Qf4+ 36. Kh1 h6?? 37. Qg2

37. Rf1

37... e4 38. Rd7

White goes on to win.

1-0

Eastgate May Quads (Round 3, G/30)

The short time control leads to another game lost by my opponent in a time-pressure blunder. But in fairness I miss quite a few winning opportunities in the endgame.

1. d4 c5 2. d5 d6 3. c4 b5 4. cxb5 Nf6 5. Nc3 a6 6. bxa6 Bxa6 7. Nf3 Nbd7 8. e4 Bxf1 9. Rxf1 g6 10. Bd2 Bg7 11. Qc2 O-O 12. Ke2 Nb6 13. b3 Qd7 14. h3 Qc7 15. Rfc1 Qa7 16. Kf1 Qa6+ 17. Kg1 Rfc8 18. 41. Nd5+ Ke5 42. Rxd3 then if 42... Nb6? 43. a5 Nxd5 44. Rxd5+ Rxd5 45. exd5 Kxd5 and white wins.

41... Ne3 42. Rd2?
