Black loses a rook in the opening, after which White just goes for the endgame.

Eastgate April Swiss (Round 2, G/90)

A fairly quiet, even game.

1. e4 Nf6 2. Bc4 d6

I opt for a hypermodern defense to the Krejcik Variation. Theory says the more tactical 2... Nxe4 3. Bxf7+ Kxf7 4. Qh5+ followed by either 4... g6 (or 4... Kg8) is fine for Black, though.

3. Nc3 g6 4. Nf3 Bg4 5. h3 Bxf3 6. Qxf3 Bg7 7. d4 Nbd7 8. Bg5 O-O 9. Rd1 Qc8 10. O-O c5 11. Bxf6 Bxf6 12. Nd5 Kg7 13. Nxf6 exf6

I chose this over 13... Nxf6 because I was hoping to eventually play ... Nd5. I'm not sure this was the right decision, however.

14. Bb5 cxd4 15. Bxd7 Qxd7 16. Rxd4 Qc6 17. Qd3 Rfe8

Trying to hang on to the d-pawn fails after White's Rd1. Better to counterattack White's e-pawn.

18. Rxd6 Qxe4 19. Qxe4 Rxe4 20. Rfd1 Re2 21. R1d2 1/2-1/2

Queen's Gambit Declined/Janowski VariationD31/04

C. Carroll (1389) - A. Pierce (1179)

Eastgate April Swiss (Round 3, G/90)
Indianapolis, Indiana USA - April 18, 2001

Black gets his queen in a cramped space. White tries to trap it, but Black manages to squeak out of it only down the exchange. Black loses another piece shortly thereafter, however.

1. d4 d5 2. c4 e6 3. Nc3 a6 4. Nf3 b6 5. Bf4 Bd6 6. Bxd6 Qxd6 7. e3 Nd7 8. Bd3 dxc4 9. Bxc4 Qb4 10. Bb3 Ngf6 11. O-O Bb7 12. Rc1 O-O 13. Nb1 c5 14. Nbd2 Rad8 15. a3 Qb5 16. Qc2

Planning to trap the Black queen with 17. Ba4 Qa5 18. Nc4 However, Black manages to find:

16... Rc8 17. Ba4 Qa5 18. Nc4 cxd4 19. Nxa5 Rxc2 20. Rxc2 d3 21. Rc7?!

21. Nxb7 dxc2 leaves me up a full piece, rather than the exchange as the text does. I was overly concerned about the passed pawn.

21... bxa5 22. Rd1

Again, too concerned about the passed pawn, which I can actually pick off at my leisure. Black can now avoid losing a piece with 22... Bxf3 23. gxf3 Ne5

22... Be4? 23. Bxd7 Nxd7 24. Rxd7 Rc8 25. Ne5 h6 26. Nxd3 Bc6 27. Rd6 Ba4 28. Rc1 Rb8 29. f3 Bb5 30. Nc5 Rc8 31. Rc3 Ra8 32. a4 Be8 33. Rxa6 Rb8 34. b3 e5 35. Rxa5 f5 36. Rd3 h5 37. Ne6 Kf7 38. Missing the mate in two: 47. Rd6 h3 48. e4#

Another outing for the Krejcik Variation of Alekheine's Defense, and another draw.

1. e4 Nf6 2. Bc4 d6

This is OK if Black is going to play a hypermodern defense as I did two rounds earlier, but if Black is going to play ... Nxe4 it should probably be done right away.

3. d4 Nxe4 4. Bxf7+ Kxf7 5. Qh5+ Kg8 6. Qd5+ e6 7. Qxe4 Qf6 8. Nf3 d5 9. Qd3 c5 10. c3 Nc6 11. O-O Bd7 12. Re1 Re8 13. Bg5 Qf5 14. Qxf5 exf5 15. Rxe8 Bxe8 16. dxc5 Bxc5 17. Nbd2 Bd6 18. Be3 b6 19. Nd4 Bd7

Chessmaster likes 19... f4 20. Nf5 fxe3 21. Nxd6 exd2 22. Nxe8

Wrong is 19... g6?? 20. Nxc6 Bxc6 21. Bd4 and Black loses his rook.

20. Nxc6 Bxc6 21. Bd4 Kf7 22. Re1 Re8 23. Rxe8 Bxe8 24. h3 g6 25. Nf3 Bb5 26. Ng5+ Kg8 27. Nf3 Bc4 28. a3 Bf4 29. Be3 Bxe3

Black's two bishops are nice, but I don't see how Black can make any progress here without trading bishops.

30. fxe3 Kg7 31. Kf2 Kf6 32. h4 h6 33. Nd2 Bb5 34. Kf3 Ke5 35. g3 Bc6 36. Kf2 g5 37. hxg5 hxg5 38. Nf3+ Kf6 1/2-1/2
